Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, N.C. - The Hickory Crawdads late comeback attempts fell short, as the Rome Braves hung on for the 4-2 win before 3,370 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Friday night.
The Braves (11-17, 46-52) got out to an early lead with a couple of runs in the top of the first inning against RHP Wilfredo Boscan (4-6). 2B Joel Campusano hit a one-out triple and scored on an infield RBI base hit by RF Luis Sumoza. Sumoza then advanced to second base when C Braeden Schlehuber was hit by a pitch, before scoring on a two-out RBI single by CF Jahdiel Santamaria.
The Crawdads (15-12, 48-48) got on the board in the bottom of the second inning against RHP Zeke Spruill (8-5), cutting the Rome lead to just a run, 2-1. LF Jared Bolden blasted a one-out triple to the right-center field gap, and RF Miguel Alfonzo brought him in from third base with an RBI ground out.
After Rome stretched the lead back to two with an unearned run in the third, the Crawdads again pulled within run in the fourth inning. C Doug Hogan crushed a pitch from Spruill over the left field wall for a solo home run, his 14th long-ball of the season, making it 3-2.
Rome responded with a run in the top of the fifth, taking a 4-2 lead in Boscan's final inning of work. Campusano reached on a one-out single and then advanced to third on a base hit by Sumoza. Campusano then came in on an RBI ground out by Schlehuber, putting the Braves back up by two.
RHP Cody Eppley took over on the mound to start the sixth inning, and pitched four shutout frames the rest of the way, allowing just one hit and striking out three to keep the score close. However, the Braves pitchers matched Eppley's scoreless effort and the 4-2 Rome lead went final. The Crawdads got runners into scoring position in both the seventh and eighth innings, but Spruill got out of the seventh and RHP Jaye Chapman escaped a bases loaded, no outs jam in the eighth with no runs coming in before dealing a scoreless ninth as well. Boscan was tagged with the loss for the Crawdads, while Spruill earned the win and Chapman registered the save for Rome.
