Worcester Bravehearts News Release
Burlington, VT - The Worcester Bravehearts dropped game one of the Futures League playoff semifinals 15-1 against the Vermont Lake Monsters at Centennial Field.
Worcester is now in a must-win situation as they return to Fitton Field Sunday for game two at 5:00.
Vermont struck in the bottom of the first inning. A Jimmy Evans (Tufts) RBI double scored Tyler Favretto (Crowder). Evans would then score on a Colby Brouillette (Clarkson) double, giving Vermont a 2-0 lead.
The Lake Monsters proceeded to open the game up in the second, scoring six times in the frame. Two Bravehearts errors enabled three of the runs to score. By the end of the second inning, Vermont led 8-0.
Vermont continued to pull away throughout the contest, scoring another run in the fifth and six more runs in the seventh.
The Bravehearts got on the board in the top of the fourth thanks to an Andrew Selima (Merrimack) double that scored North Attleboro native Zach DeMattio (Wheaton). Worcester scored another run in the ninth on a Christian Siciliano (Southern Maine) sacrifice fly that brought in Gavin Noriega (Marist), but that would be all the scoring they could muster.
The winning pitcher was Vermont's Billy Oldham (Eastern Connecticut State), who gave up one unearned run across five innings on four hits and a walk while striking out five. Bravehearts starter Bryce Afthim (Southern Maine) took the loss, giving up eight runs (three earned) on five hits across 1.1 innings, walking three and striking out two.
