Worcester Bravehearts News Release
Worcester, MA - The Worcester Bravehearts fell 10-0 to the Norwich Sea Unicorns by mercy rule on Tuesday. The loss makes Worcester's overall record for the season 35-21, tied with the Vermont Lake Monsters for first place in the standings.
Norwich earned their first runs in the bottom of the first inning. Zack Kovalchik (Sacred Heart) scored on a wild pitch, followed by a sacrifice fly by Brennan Hyde (Nichols), which gave the Sea Unicorns the lead at 2-0.
The Sea Unicorns added two more runs in the second, one on a Kovalchik single and the other on a Johnny Knox (Nichols) groundout.
Norwich continued to widen their lead, with six additional runs in the fifth. A single by Andrew Bianco (Seton Hall) brought in a run, followed by a bases-loaded walk to add another. A bases-clearing triple by CJ Egrie (Holy Cross) earned three runs to continue Norwich's scoring, and finally a second Kovalchik single brought in one last run. This made the score 10-0.
The Bravehearts were unable to beat out Norwich, resulting in a loss by mercy rule in the seventh inning per Futures League guidelines.
The winning pitcher is Sean Finn, who let up neither a hit nor a run in three innings, while striking out three. The losing pitcher was Tyler Nielsen (University of Maine), who let up six hits and six runs in just over four innings pitched.
The Bravehearts will be on the road tomorrow, facing the Brockton Rox in an evening doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Worcester will return to Fitton on Saturday in a doubleheader against the Vermont Lake Monsters. The first game will resume a matchup suspended on July 21st in the fourth inning due to rain. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
