Worcester Bravehearts News Release
LEOMINSTER -- The 2014 Worcester Bravehearts prided themselves on hitting in the clutch, and in the first game of the 2015 season, the Bravehearts have already shown their ability to do the same.
With the game tied 2-2 in the top of the ninth inning, Bravehearts catcher Alex Sanchez knocked in second baseman Derek Gibree to give the Bravehearts enough for a 3-2 victory against the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs on June 4 on Doyle Field in Leominster.
Hitting in the second spot of the lineup, Sanchez went 2-5, collecting half of only four hits by Worcester. Assumption College third baseman and Shrewsbury native Mike Coggeshall and Cochise College center fielder Adam De La Cruz had the other two hits for the Bravehearts. Worcester took the lead in the fourth inning when De La Cruz drew a bases-loaded walk to score Coppin State first baseman Bobby Dragon. Bravehearts shortstop Gavin Tristan scored in the fifth to make it 2-0 Worcester.
The Dirt Dawgs responded in the bottom of the fifth inning with two runs off Flagler College pitcher Chris Lake. Wachusett designated hitter Jason Fatzinger grounded into a double play, but center fielder Sebastian DiMauro was able to score on the play. In the next at bat, left fielder Kurtis White tied the game by scoring on a wild pitch by Lake.
Franklin Pierce pitcher and Worcester native Luke Brennan collected the win, after he entered the game in the eight inning and retired six straight batters in order. Brennan struck out four of the six hitters he faced. UMass Dartmouth pitcher Matthew Cronin took the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning.
The 1-0 Bravehearts will play the other end of a home-and-home series against the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs at 7:05 p.m. June 5 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
