Worcester Bravehearts News Release
WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester Bravehearts shuffled around several mottos throughout their championship campaign, but their final phrase 'mission accomplished' officially sums up their season.
In their first season of existence, the Worcester Bravehearts dethroned the defending FCBL champions the Martha's Vineyard Sharks with a 1-0 win in Game 2 in front of a sold out crowd of 3,121 fans Aug. 14 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
Defensive Player of the Year and Playoffs MVP Andy Lack scored the lone run of the game in the fifth inning. With two outs, Lack attempted to steal third base when left fielder Brendan O'Reilly hit a hard grounder to the right side of the infielder. Second baseman Jack Roberts bobbled the ball, and Lack dashed all the way around to home to give the home team a 5-0 lead.
In the half inning prior, the Sharks had runners on the corners with the scored tied 0-0. With two outs, center fielder Ryan Kelly hit a deep fly ball into the gap, but Bravehearts center fielder Ian Strom made a leaping grab to his left to end the inning.
Shrewsbury, Mass., native Josh Desai got the win for Worcester, as he pitched seven scoreless innings, struck out eight and allowed only three hits. Clark University pitcher Miles Sheehan pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning, and Holy Cross junior pitched a perfect ninth to record the save on his home field.
Martha's Vineyard starter Max Slade took the loss despite surrendering zero earned runs and just four hits in six innings pitched.
Strom and Douglas, Mass., native Nate Pajka each recorded a hit in the victory.
