Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas (May 3)- Three powerplay goals and strong defensive play sparked the Texas Brahmas to victory in Game Three of the Ray Miron President's Cup Finals as they defeated the Colorado Eagles 6-2 in front of a packed barn at the NYTEX Sports Centre.
The Brahmas took a 1-0 lead in the first when forward Tyler Skworchinski netted a powerplay goal as he darted in front of Colorado goaltender Andrew Penner. The goal was Skworchinski's league leading 12th goal of the postseason.
It was an exchange of goals in the second beginning with a Colorado powerplay goal from Ed McGrane to tie the game. Two minutes later Texas retaliated as Matt Quinn put the puck to the back of the net as he sat on Penner's doorstep. Assisting on the goal was Pete Rouleau and Greg McConnell. An opportunity arose for the Brahmas when the Eagles were called on a pair of penalties, but with a few seconds remaining with the man advantage, it was Colorado's McGrane who netted the goal for his second of the night.
With just under two minutes remaining in the period Texas' forward Travis Banga represented why coaches stress the importance of following up shots when he took a Brandon Benedict rebounded shot and placed it atop of Penner's shoulder for the 3-2 lead heading into the intermission.
Three goals in the third period by the Brahmas paved the way for a big 6-2 win over the Eagles in Game Three to take a 2-1 series lead in the CHL Finals. It was Grant Jacobsen that beat Penner for Texas' fourth goal in the game as he curtailed traffic in front of the net. At a faceoff Eagles forward Konrad Reeder was called for a five minute major for butt-ending Pete Rouleau and earned an early pass to the showers. Colorado coach Kevin McClelland, frustrated with the call, earned a two minute penalty on the bench to put his team down two players. Skworchinski knew what to do as he tallied his second powerplay goal of the game from Travis Banga and Mike Vellinga. Pete Rouleau was able to get his revenge in the form of his fourth goal of the postseason at the 12:50 mark.
Goaltender Brett Jaeger stopped 22 of 24 shots and Texas outshot Colorado 35 shots to 24. Game Four of the CHL Finals between the Texas Brahmas and Colorado Eagles is slated for Tuesday at the NYTEX Sports Centre. Faceoff is at 7:05 PM.
