The final regular season series between the Lone Star Brahmas and Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees opened at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, TX on Friday night.
Lone Star controlled play for most of the first period outshooting the Killer Bees 13 - 6 in the period and generating multiple scoring chances. They finally broke through at 10:40 when Sean Giles held in a clearing attempt at the far point and pumped it on net.Oskar Andren redirected the shot off a defender to Sebastian Vidmar in the slot and he put it short side past Nick Schmit.
Vidmar lit the lamp for his second of the night with just 2:35 left in the second. Cody Wickline kicked it from the far half wall toHunter Stanley in the high slot. Stanley hit Vidmar coming across the crease with a backhand pass in front. Schmit sold out to a poke check, but Vidmar pulled it back and then flipped it over the prone netminder.
In the third, Wickline skated across the ice to the far side then whipped it out to Stanley at the blueline. Stanley cycled it to AJ Vanderbeck at the goal line on the near side. Vanderbeck threw one on net that Schmit knocked down with the puck left in the paint for Wickline to bat into the net from just off the far post.
Jake Kupsky stopped all 19 shots sent his way for his second shutout of the season and though he did not crack the score sheet, Alexey Solovyev had a big game defensively. The Brahmas outshot the Killer Bees 22 - 19 in the game and both teams were 0 - 4 on the power play. The win ensured the Brahmas would maintain their hold on first place in the NAHL South Division.
