Boston Blazers News Release

Boston, MA (April 16, 2011)-The Boston Blazers traveled to the HSBC Arena Saturday evening to battle the Buffalo Bandits in their final regular season game before a crowd of 17,318 fans. Despite an 1-5 overall record against the Bandits coming into this match-up, Boston could not be stopped and defeated Buffalo with a final score of 16-9.

In a back-and-forth battle throughout the first half, the Blazers started off strong as Jamie Rooney scored just 1:22 minutes into the first quarter off an assist from Josh Sanderson. Brenden Thenhaus netted the first for Buffalo off assists by Brett Bucktooth and Mark Steeinhuis.

A bomb from the outside by Blazers Kevin Buchanan ended the first quarter in a 3-2 score in Boston's favor. Bandits Roger Vyse brought the score back to even to start the second quarter but Buchanan would continue to dominate from the outside knocking in two more keeping the lead for the Blazers.

Buffalo's Tracey Kelusky made an incredible behind the back goal to bring the Bandits back within one from assists off Bucktooth and John Tavares. However, Boston captain Dan Dawson would battle through two defenders to grab one more goal with just 45.8 second remaining in the first half making it a 7-5 Blazers lead.

The second half was controlled by the Blazers offense as Buchanan, Dawson, and Nick Cotter would score three straight goals giving Boston their largest lead of the game with a score of 10-6. Bandits goaltender Mike Thompson would subsequently be replaced by Angus Goodleaf at the 5:22 mark in the third.

Just 23 seconds into the fourth quarter, Rooney would score his second goal of the night immediately followed by an unassisted goal by defender Jack Reid. The Bandits would bring the score back within four as Tavares and Vyse scored two but Boston could not be stopped. Rooney and Buchanan netted two more goals along with a penalty shot and score by Jason Duboe due to a too many men on the turf penalty under the two minute mark on Buffalo.

The Blazers were led by Buchanan with five goals and four assists and Rooney with three goals and two assists while the Bandits Vyse had three goals. Blazers goalie Anthony Cosmo recorded 38 saves on 47 shots while Thompson finished with 21 saves on 31 shots on goal and Goodleaf had 12 saves on 17 shots on goal.

Boston finishes the regular season with an 8-8 record as they move into the playoffs in two weeks. The Blazers will either challenge the Bandits again or face the Toronto Rock dependent on the outcome of these two teams remaining games. Visit blazerslacrosse.com for further information.
