WATERTOWN, Mass. - The Boston Breakers opened the preseason Sunday night by getting goals from seven different players in a 7-0 win over Northeastern University.
The teams played three, 30-minute periods at Parsons Field in Brookline, Mass., home of the Huskies.
"I was pleased. This week was predominantly about fitness, and tonight was about getting minutes before we go away to Florida for two games. The pleasing thing was that we were trying things. I know certain things didn't come off, but in two weeks when they are fitter and sharper, they will come off," Boston Breakers head coach Matt Beard said. "We scored goals and got in goal-scoring positions, and I think that's important. I said to them before the game, we trained really well Saturday, and I think it was good preparation for today. It was about trusting each other and moving the ball."
The Breakers controlled possession early on, and after two close calls - on shots by Stephanie McCaffrey and Angela Salem - Kristie Mewis gave the Breakers a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.
Swedish international Louise Schillgard sent a pass into the box to Mewis, who chested it down before hitting it past Northeastern keeper Nathalie Nidetch for the 1-0 lead.
The Breakers doubled their lead with seconds remaining in the first period. Katie Schoepfer curled in a corner kick that Nidetch tried punching out but was unsuccessful. The Breakers took a 2-0 lead into the second period.
It was a busy second period for the Breakers as they tacked on three goals in a 14-minute span. It began in the 38th minute when McCaffrey darted past her defender and into the box, finding Morgan Marlborough in front of goal. The second-year Breaker knocked it in to make it a 3-0 game.
Defender Julie King put the Breakers ahead, 4-0, in the 42nd minute, using the back of her head to redirect a corner from Schillgard into goal. Ten minutes later, rookie Brittany Ratcliffe got on the scoresheet. The former Virginia star, and the No. 17 overall pick in the 2016 NWSL College Draft, was on the end of a great ball played in by Schillgard. Ratcliffe struck it into goal to give Boston a 5-0 lead.
The Breakers added two goals in the third and final period. In the 67th minute, defender Rachel Wood leapt above everyone on a corner by Mollie Pathman. Wood sharply headed the ball into goal, putting the Breakers ahead, 6-0.
Rookie Elise Krieghoff, who played her college soccer last year at Cal Poly, capped the scoring in the 78th minute. It began when Stephanie Verdoia sent a through ball into the box for Krieghoff, who then took a shot on goal, which was stopped. Krieghoff pounced on her own rebound and scored for the 7-0 final.
The Breakers return to preseason action Friday, March 25, taking on Florida State in Tallahassee. Season and single-game tickets for 2016 are on sale now. To purchase tickets, call 617-945-1704 or visit www.breakerstickets.com.
