Boston Breakers News Release
HANOVER, Mass. (March 9, 2015) - The Boston Breakers open the 2015 NWSL preseason today with the first training scheduled at University Sports Complex in Hanover, Mass., at 10 a.m.? ET.
The 29-player roster includes 11 members of the 2014 team in addition to six new offseason acquisitions.
Among the returnees from last year's squad is 2014 NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year Alyssa Naeher, who set a league and franchise record with 106 saves. She also stopped a league-best six penalty shots and registered three shutouts. The veteran-most player on the team, midfielder Katie Schoepfer, is back for her fifth season, while defenders Cat Whitehill and Julie King are set to enter their fourth season as Breakers.
The Breakers acquired a number of players during the offseason, including former FC Kansas City duo, forward Morgan Marlborough and defender Kassey Kallman. The two came to Boston in a trade for Heather O'Reilly.
Former Western New York Flash defender Amy Barczuk, as well as Brazilians Suzane Pires, Ketlen Wiggers, Rafaeala Travalao, and Beatriz Vaz e Silva, round out the new additions to the 2015 team.
All six players the Breakers obtained at the 2015 NWSL College Draft will report to camp Monday, including the recently signed Stephanie McCaffrey (Boston College). The 2015 draft class also features forwards Bianca Brinson (Texas A&M), Jamia Fields (Florida State), and Stephanie Verdoia (Seattle), and defenders Sam Lofton (James Madison) and Bianca Calderone (Northeastern).
McCaffrey and Verdoia recently returned from Spain after helping the U.S. U-23 squad go 3-0 in the tournament in La Manga. McCaffrey started two games (vs. Japan and England), while Verdoia started against Norway and came on in the second half against England. She had an assist in the win over Norway.
The Breakers open the 2015 NWSL season at Portland on April 11 before returning home April 26 to face the Houston Dash at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium in Allston, Mass.
