HANOVER, Mass. (Feb. 24, 2015) - Boston Breakers midfielder Nikki Washington announced today her decision to retire from professional soccer. Washington, 26, retires after playing two seasons in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL).
"We would like to thank Nikki for her contributions to the Boston Breakers and for her work within women's soccer," Boston Breakers general manager Lee Billiard said. "Nikki is a fantastic professional and someone who we will miss in Boston. I know it was a tough decision for Nikki. We wish her all the best for the future."
In 2014, the Mesquite, Texas native started the season with the Houston Dash before the Breakers acquired her via trade on April 29.
With the Breakers, Washington played 15 games (10 starts), scored one goal, and logged 939 minutes. She also played at total of 1,186 minutes and made 18 appearances with 13 starts with both Boston and Houston.
"I'm so grateful to the Breaker fans, organization, coaching staff, players and everyone who supports women's soccer in the U.S.," Washington said. "My life and experiences have been hugely shaped by soccer and by my time in Boston."
Washington played for Portland Thorns FC during the 2013 NWSL season and registered the first assist in Thorns FC history in a 2-1 win over Seattle Reign FC on April 21. She made 11 appearances (10 starts) and finished with one goal and two assists.
Last year marked Washington's second stint in Boston. She appeared in five matches for the Breakers in Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) during the 2011 season.
