WATERTOWN, Mass. - Boston Breakers midfielder Amy Barczuk announced her retirement today from professional soccer.

The 25-year-old from Centennial, Colo., played one season with the Boston Breakers following two years with the Western New York Flash.

"I am very grateful for my three years in the NWSL and this past season with Boston. It was a very difficult decision to retire, but I know it is time for me to move on to the next chapter in my life. I am going to miss the sport and my teammates greatly," Barczuk said. "Most importantly, I would like to tell my family how appreciative I am for their never-ending support and love. They are the reason I made it to where I am today. I would like to thank the Breakers for their professionalism and support; it was a pleasure to play for such a great club. I would also like to thank my teammates. I couldn't have asked for better girls to play with and I wish you all nothing but the best this next year. Go Breakers."

In 2015 with the Breakers, Barczuk set career highs for appearances (20), starts (18), and minutes played (1,612), which she ranked third on the team. With the Flash in 2014, Barczuk appeared in 19 matches (nine starts) and logged 886 minutes. In her rookie year of 2013, Barczuk started four of the nine games she appeared in, including two playoff games. Following the 2013 NWSL season, Barczuk went on loan to WFK Zorky in Russia, where she played every minute of her four starts during the tournament phase of the UEFA Women's Champions League.

"Amy was a pure professional, on and off the field, in how she practiced, played and represented the Boston Breakers brand. She was very active in our youth program and took pride in sharing her knowledge and experiences with the youth players," Boston Breakers general manager Lee Billiard said. "We will certainly miss her from the game. We thank her for all she did during her time in Boston and wish her all the best for the future."

A standout midfielder at the University of Colorado, Barczuk is one of only four players in program history to appear in every game during her four-year career. She registered 23 points, scoring 10 goals, at Colorado. Barczuk was the No. 14 overall pick in the 2013 NWSL College Draft, selected by the Western New York Flash.
