Bombers Win Game One; Take 1-0 Series Lead In Kelly Cup Finals

Boise, ID - The Dayton Bombers took a 1-0 lead in the 2007 Kelly Cup Finals with a 2-1 victory over the Idaho Steelheads on Wednesday night at Qwest Arena in Boise, Idaho.
The first period was dominated by stellar goaltending until the Bombers capitalized on a two-on-one rush late in the frame to take a 1-0 lead. Philippe Dupuis gathered the bouncing puck and fed Yannick Tifu as the duo raced into the Steelheads' zone. Tifu unleashed a snap shot from the bottom of the right circles that beat Steelheads goaltender Steve Silverthorn (21 saves, L) cleanly, low to the blocker side. The even-strength goal was Tifu's seventh of the playoffs.
Trailing 1-0 with just 6:55 left in regulation, the Steelheads broke through, when defenseman Colin Peters snapped a shot through traffic from the right point that Francis Wathier tipped through the legs of Bombers' goaltender Adam Berkhoel (29 saves, W) to tie the game at one.
Rookie Trevor Frischmon scored the game-winning goal with less than three minutes left in regulation with a solid rebound from teammate Petr Pohl. Two of Frischmon's three playoff goals thus far have been game-winners.
The Bombers were outshot by the Steelheads 30-24. Both teams finished scoreless on the power play; the Bombers went 0-4, while the Steelheads went 0-1, a playoff low.
The win helps the Bombers take over home ice advantage in this series, with Game 2 slated for Friday, May 25 in Boise. The Bombers will return home for the best-of-seven series on Sunday, May 27 for Game 3 at 8:00 p.m. at the Ervin J. Nutter Center. Games 4 and 5 (if necessary), will follow on Tuesday, May 29 and Thursday, May 31, respectively. Both games are slated for 7:00 p.m. starts.
