Bombers' Pitching, Two-Out Rally Key 3-1 Win over Sliders
June 13, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Dubois County Bombers News Release
The Dubois County Bombers rode the arms of three pitchers, and a two-out rally in the seventh inning provided the edge as they knocked off the Springfield Sliders 3-1 June 13 at League Stadium in Huntingburg, Ind.
Nick Smart earned the win after pitching two innings of scoreless relief for starter Alex Britt, striking out three and allowing only one base runner via a walk. Britt allowed one earned run in six innings, giving up six hits and two walks while striking out six.
The Bombers scored one run in the first off Sliders starter Zach Wittmus. Left fielder Landon Curry and second baseman Frank Rawdow hit singles and advanced on shortstop Dalton Rouleaux's sacrifice bunt. Curry scored on third baseman Cody Daily's bloop single.
That score held until the Sliders tied it in the sixth, ending Britt's night.
Sliders left-hander Rob McDonald opened the sixth for Springfield and promptly struck out the first four men he faced and retired the fifth on a fly out.
Then the Bombers engineered some magic.
Curry walked, and Rawdow crushed a ground-rule double to center. McDonald's night was done after he walked Rouleaux, and in came Nick Capra, who had taken the loss for the Sliders the previous night as the Bombers won 8-5 in Springfield.
Capra promptly walked Daily and designated hitter Brendan Neel to force in the go-ahead runs before retiring first baseman Jeff Zahn to end the threat.
Smart worked through the eighth, and Kurt Kudrecki was dispatched to the mound in the top of the ninth to close it out for the Bombers. His night, however, came to an abrupt end as he walked Sliders pinch hitter Michael Hurtwitz and allowed a double to pinch hitter Mathew Tellor.
Nick Green relieved Kudrecki and put out the fire, striking out the next two Sliders before he retired shortstop Matt Highlander on a groundout to shortstop to end the game.
Dubois County improved to 12-2 and remained first in both the Prospect League and their division. Springfield fell to 3-11.
The Bombers hit the road for a pair in Quincy and one game in Danville before returning home Sunday to face the Dans. The Sliders host the Terre Haute Rex the next two nights.
