Bombers Drop Third Straight to Gems 9-6

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy Gems overcame a fifth-inning deficit of 5-1 to knock off the Dubois County Bombers 9-6 Monday night at Quincy Stadium. It was the Bombers' third straight loss.

Craig Bastert retired the final two Bombers in the sixth and worked a clean seventh to earn the win for Quincy; he allowed one hit and struck out one.

John Rashid pitched the final three and two-thirds innings for Dubois County and took the loss, surrendering five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two.

Neither team played a particularly clean game - each committed three errors - and only two of the six runs the Bombers scored were earned.

Dubois County pitchers also walked nine Gems.

Quincy jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third with an unearned run off Bombers starter Nelson Marchan, but Marchan left in the bottom of the fourth inning with a 2-1 lead after his teammates scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth.

Marchan pitched three and a third and allowed only the unearned run on two hits and five walks; he struck out two.

Dubois County increased its lead to 5-1 in the fifth before surrendering three in the bottom of the fifth, all of which were charged to Kurt Kudrecki (one inning, three earned runs, three hits, two walks and a strikeout).

Quincy utilized a three-run seventh to take the lead and put the game away with a two-run eighth. The Bombers scored an unearned run in the ninth to cap the scoring.

Dubois County (5-6 in the second half) returns to League Stadium in Huntingburg, Ind., Tuesday evening for a 7:15 game versus the Springfield Sliders. Quincy (6-5) hosts the Hannibal Cavemen.
