Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg Hillcats reliever Tom Boleska will pitch for Great Britain in the 2009 Baseball World Cup, which takes place September 9 through 27. Boleska will not return to the Hillcats in 2009.
Boleska began the season with Lynchburg and made two appearances with Hillcats in April before undergoing elbow surgery. He missed nearly three months of the season and returned to Lynchburg on July 19. In 16 appearances with Lynchburg, Boleska pitched 39 1/3 innings and compiled a 1-1 record with a 1.60 ERA. The 23-year-old right-hander is a Canadian native with family ties to Great Britain.
In addition to Boleska, former Hillcat Brant Ust will play for Great Britain's World Cup squad. Ust played in seven games with Lynchburg in 2006 and batted .167 (3-for-18) with a double and an RBI. Great Britain will open against Japan in Zagreb, Croatia on September 10.
Boleska becomes the fifth member of the 2009 Hillcats to join a World Cup participant. RHP Dustin Molleken (Canada), RHP R. J. Rodriguez (Puerto Rico), LHP Paul Mildren (Australia) and 3B Pedro Alvarez (U.S.) will also compete in the Baseball World Cup. All five players were on Lynchburg's Opening Day roster. The Pirates released Mildren on August 12.
