Boisclair, Carle and Esposito win QMJHL player of the month awards
November 2, 2005 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) News Release
BOUCHERVILLE, Wednesday, November 2, 2005 (QMJHL) - The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League today announced the winners of the offensive, defensive and rookie player of the month awards for October following a list of candidates submitted by the eighteen QMJHL teams. A League mandated committee is responsible for picking the monthly winners.
The offensive player of the month is none other than two-time QMJHL player of the week award winner Maxime Boisclair of the Chicoutimi Saguenéens. Boisclair was the first player to tally 20 goals this year. He currently sits first in the overall scoring lead with 21 goals and 41 points in eighteen games. Twice in the past four weeks he's scored at least three goals in one game. He's also enjoyed the fruits of a seven point night in a 9-1 win over the archrival Quebec Remparts. Furthermore, he's already managed to score three game-winning goals and is a very healthy plus-12. Chicoutimi is third in the Western division standings, only two points behind both the Gatineau Olympiques and the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.
Other players considered for the award were Derick Brassard of Drummondville, Alexander Radulov of Quebec and Brent Aubin of Rouyn-Noranda.
The defensive player of the month award winner is Mathieu Carle of the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. The 6'1'', 209 lb defenseman leads all blue-liners in scoring with 8 goals and 26 points to go along with one game-winner. He's been steady at his own end (plus-4) while leading his team to the best record in the QMJHL. He's also showed an edge to his game; throwing his weight around in the form of twenty bodychecks.
Goaltenders David Tremblay of Gatineau, Sylvain Michaud of Chicoutimi and Ondrej Pavelec of Cape Breton were also considered.
Among rookies, Angelo Esposito of the Quebec Remparts takes home the honour. The 16 year-old forward has started his Major Junior career with quite a bang. After only sixteen games, he's managed 17 goals and 18 assists; an average of 2.19 points per game. Already, he's scored two hat-tricks while notching three game-winners. Despite his young age, Esposito is no stranger to physical play, having inflicted quite a bit of punishment on his opposition, totalling thirty two bodychecks. Also, his plus-11 rating remains surprising for a rookie. Playing alongside Alexander Radulov, the duo is one of the most feared in the QMJHL.
The finalists for the rookie honour were goaltender Ondrej Pavelec of Cape Breton, winger Claude Giroux of Gatineau and defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk of Halifax.
