Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, CT) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (12-24) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (13-23), 3-1 Sunday afternoon at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The win ended a four game losing streak for the 'Fish, who were guest managed by former USA Softball player Jennie Finch, who became the first female to manage a men's professional sports team with the appearance. Bridgeport is now 3-0 in games where a guest manager has been brought into the Park City to lead the team.
Bridgeport's Mike Antonini (3-4) picked up the victory, putting in six innings on the mound while registering his fourth quality start in the southpaw's last five games. The Pennsylvania native allowed one earned run on four hits while walking and striking out four. Eric Niesen earned his second save of the year, pitching the final inning of the contest, where he walked a batter and stuck a man out. Southern Maryland's Gaby Hernandez (0-4) was tagged with the loss, lasting six innings, where he allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, allowing two free passes and striking out two.
Bridgeport got on the board first, as back-and-forth innings led to an RBI single by Anthony Giansanti, plating Dan Johnson in the bottom of the fourth inning with the game's first run. A leadoff home run to left field by Southern Maryland's Angel Flores in the top of the fifth inning gave the catcher his second shot of the season, and tied the game at one. Giansanti would score a run of his own in the bottom of the sixth inning as Luis Nunez would send the speedy outfielder home with two outs to give Bridgeport a 2-1 cushion. Nunez reached home soon after as a result of an error by Southern Maryland's Zach Wilson on a ground ball hit by Luis Rodriguez, extending the Bluefish to 3-1 after six. The relief effort for Bridgeport was the difference in the victory, as Joseph Kuzia, Taylor Thompson, and Niesen combined to pitch the final three innings without allowing a run on three hits, walking three and striking out one. Luis Nunez led the offensive efforts for the Bluefish with a pair of base knocks. Photo provided courtesy of Daniel Saunders.
