
Bluefish Outlast Barnstormers In Extra Innings To Take Finale

(Bridgeport, CT) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (17-29) defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers (24-21) 6-5 Thursday evening at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in ten innings to take the rubber match of a three game mid-week series between the two clubs. The Bluefish eclipse 10 or more hits in a game for the 17th time this season, improving to 2-1 on the homestand. The Barnstormers fall to 2-5 on the 2016 campaign in extra inning contests.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Mike Antonini registered a no-decision in the game, pitching the first six innings, giving up two runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out a season-high seven batters. Lancaster Starting Pitcher Tanner Peters also did not factor into the outcome of the game, allowing five runs on nine hits in four innings on the mound. Joe Kuzia (2-0) was victorious for the 'Fish, allowing a hit and a walk in a scoreless inning of relief. Lancaster's Scott Gracey (2-2) suffered the loss, surrendering a run on two hits while walking two in an inning and a third of relief.
Bridgeport struck first in the bottom of the second inning, as leadoff batter Jose Cuevas was sent home by a Jonathan Galvez double. Galvez would later score on a wild pitch thrown by Peters, giving Bridgeport a 2-0 lead. The next inning led to another pair of runs on the board for the Bluefish, as Galvez doubled for the second time in as many at-bats, sending two more home and giving the Bluefish a 4-0 lead heading into the fourth inning. The 'Bridgeport lead increased to 5-0 in the fourth, as Luis Nunez stole second base and was then driven home by Luis Hernandez, who extended his on-base streak to 15 straight games.
Lancaster would score two runs in the top of the sixth, with Caleb Gindl reaching home off a double by Josh Whitaker, who advanced to third on the play following a Bridgeport throwing error. Whitaker would be driven in by Mike McDade, who singled for the second time in the contest, extending his hitting streak to 14 games cutting the deficit to 5-2. The 'Fish lead would be cut to a single run in the top of the eighth, as Josh Bell blasted his fifth homerun of the season to right field, a two run shot which made the score 5-4. The game would be knotted at five in the top of the ninth, with Gindl lacing an RBI single to right on full count, allowing Travis Witherspoon to cross the plate and tie the game heading into the bottom of the frame. Perez reached third base for the Bluefish in the ninth, but was unable to score, as Josh Bell made and over-the-head catch in shallow right to retire Endy Chavez and send the matchup into extra innings. The Bluefish would storm the field in the bottom of the tenth, as Josh Vitters smacked a walk-off single to left field to send Jose Cuevas home as Bridgeport came away with the 6-5 victory. Cuevas and Galvez led the offensive efforts for Bridgeport, each putting up three hits in the game, with Galvez driving three runs home, and Cuevas crossing the plate three times. Bridgeport continues their seven game homestand Friday June 10th, when they welcome the New Britain Bees to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard for a single admission doubleheader, with the first game beginning at 5:12 P.M. and the nightcap taking place one half hour after the conclusion of game one. Both games are slated for seven innings.The first of two Bark in the Park games presented by Paws in 'N Effect will take place, along with a dog bandana giveaway.
