Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
Bridgeport, CT - July 24th - The last time the Bridgeport Bluefish were home, it was Luis Lopez who drove in the game-winning run in extra innings. That was on July 13th against the Newark Bears. On Thursday against the Camden Riversharks, it was more of the same for the 2008 All-Star. Lopez drilled a Mike Flannery (2-6) offering into left center, scoring pinch runner Branden Florence to end the game 4-3 in 13 innings. The Bluefish improve to 9-4 in the second half and 42-41 overall in 2008.
Jay Caligiuri gave the Bluefish a beacon of life to set up the game-winning hit. The 2007 All-Star belted a two-out game-tying double over the head of Camden centerfielder L.J. Biernbaum that scored Alex Prieto and brought Lopez to the dish.
The Riversharks took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of thirteenth with an Alberto Castillo suicide squeeze in the top of the inning. Castillo laid down a bunt with outfielder Sheldon Fulse hustling down the line and scoring the go-ahead run.
The game made it to extra frames thanks to a pair of two-run home runs in the eighth inning. Camden started their scoring with a Tim Johnson two-run shot off Bridgeport starter Mike Connolly. The Park City crew immediately responded in the bottom of the inning with a Brian Munhall towering long ball that tied the game.
T.J. Tucker (3-1) picked up the victory in his two innings of relief despite allowing the go-ahead run to score in the thirteenth. Connolly was brilliant in his start despite allowing the home run, striking out eight over nine innings and allowing two runs on four hits. Camden starter Jose Lima was equally as effective in his eight innings of work. The former Major Leaguer struck out eight and allowed two runs on four hits with two walks. Flannery suffered the loss, giving up two runs on three hits in 2.2 innings.
The Bluefish look to extend their four-game home winning streak tomorrow night at 7:05 P.M. Rafael Bergstrom (5-5) heads to the hill for Bridgeport to square off against Julio Guerrero (6-1) of Camden.
