New York Bluefins News Release

Hyannis, Mass - Toward the middle of the 2010-2011 season The FHL moved the Broome County Barons to Cape Cod. Although the Broome County Barons had a strong record in the league, the attendance at the games was poor. After the transition the Cape Cod Barons performance on the ice dropped off however the attendance picked up. After sellout games at Tony Kent Arena in Dennis, and a near sellout at the 2000 seat Hyannis Youth and Community Center, it became apparent that the Cape would be a strong market. The FHL granted membership to a new ownership group and The Cape Cod Bluefins were formed.

The Bluefins started the 2011-2012 season with a young core of rookies and an extremely low payroll, however they were very competitive and proved they belonged in the league. After notching two overtime victories against Brooklyn early on, the future looked bright for the young team. Although teams didn't look forward to playing the young hard working team, the 'Fins struggled to find a way to finish games against the other veteran teams for the remainder of the first half. Towards the end of December the team got some new life from former NHL'er Billy Tibbetts and began to put some wins together. The highlight of the season was a 7-6 over time win at home against the leagues top team the New Jersey Outlaws. The Outlaws would get their revenge in the playoffs as they swept the 'Fins in three hard fought and competitive games.

The season was over all a big success for the 'Fins. Brad Surdam was named to the FHL all-rookie team, and finished tied for first in team points with Kevin McCready (50 each). Luke Frey finished the season with an impressive +28 at the blue line, and Corey Bellamy was called up to the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL for several weeks.

The Bluefins finished the season as the only professional hockey team to be comprised of 100% American players, with a majority of the team having ties to Massachusetts. The 'Fins are excited about the upcoming season and look forward to having former player coach Dan Gordan take over the as the Head Coach and Assistant General Manager.

The building blocks are in place as the summer beckons and the offseason is in full swing as the Cape Cod Bluefins prepare for their 2nd season and look to work on building off the positives from their expansion year moving forward. See you in October.
