BlueCats Thump Greyhounds 47-24

EVANSVILLE, IN: The Evansville BlueCats earned their first victory of the season, 47-24, over the Ohio Valley Greyhounds last Saturday night at Roberts Stadium. The win moves Evansville to (1-1) on the year, as they sit in a tie for second place in the UIF Eastern Conference behind the River City Rage (2-0). The Ohio Valley Greyhounds fall to (0-2).

The BlueCats scored first on a 26-yard field goal from Ton-Ton Luzayadio and the Greyhounds answered when running back Nick Romain scored on a 5-yard touchdown run to take a 6-3 lead. Later in the first quarter, the BlueCats scored a touchdown when running back Ray Kirkley found the endzone to put Evansville on top 10-6. After that score, the BlueCats wouldn't look back as they held the lead for the rest of the game, and pulled away in the second half to win easily 47-24.

The Evansville defense led the way against the Greyhounds, forcing 5 turnovers and sacking Ohio Valley quarterback Freddy Ray 4 times. As a unit, the defense made 10 tackles for loss against the Ohio Valley offense. Defensive end LaDrelle Bryant led the way with 7.5 tackles, including 3 tackles for loss and 2 sacks. Choo Choo Davis tallied 6.5 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 2 interceptions. Tarron Acuff made 6 tackles including 1.5 tackles for loss in his 2007 debut. Defensive tackle Johnny Brown added 4 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 2 sacks. Linebacker Brian Houston made his BlueCats debut on Saturday and played well, making 2 tackles and grabbing an interception.

Defensive end Deion Holts made 5 tackles against Ohio Valley, but his biggest play in the game came on special teams when scooped up an Ohio Valley on-side kick and returned it for a touchdown. It was his first touchdown with the BlueCats.

Running back Ray Kirkley rushed for 36 yards and 2 touchdowns. Michael Cosey rushed for 13 yards and one touchdown.

Quarterback Nick Hart made his first start for the Evansville BlueCats. Hart was 9 for 23 for 81 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions. His touchdown pass was to Levron Williams on a 20-yard touchdown pass in the 3rd quarter. Williams finished with 3 receptions for 39 yards.

Ton-Ton Luzayadio was 4-5 on his field goal attempts, connecting from 26, 38, 14, and 22 yards. The missed field goal was on an attempt from 43 yards that narrowly missed wide right. Luzayadio was 3-5 on extra point kicks, both of those missed attempts were blocked.

This week the BlueCats will be on the road when they travel to face the Lexington Horsemen (1-1) at Rupp Arena. It will be Evansville's first road game of the season, as well as the home opener for Lexington. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday, April 7th, at 6:30pm Evansville time. Last week, Lexington lost in overtime on the road to the River City Rage.
