Evansville BlueCats News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN: The Evansville BlueCats return home this weekend when they host the UIF East Division leading Lexington Horsemen (3-0) Saturday night at Roberts Stadium. The BlueCats will once again attempt to defend the greatest home field advantage in all of indoor football. The BlueCats long-awaited return to Roberts Stadium comes four weeks after their home opener on March 25th and is the only home game scheduled for Evansville during the month of April. Saturday's game against Lexington is sponsored by IMI and is also "Student Night" with thousands of area elementary and high school students expected to attend.
Last season, the BlueCats and Horsemen split their regular season series with each team winning at home, before Lexington escaped with a 5 point victory in the post-season match up between the two teams when they met in Round One of the inaugural UIF playoffs at Rupp Arena.
In the first meeting between the teams last season, Evansville defeated the Horsemen 57-52 in Week Three of the 2005 regular season. Evansville defeated the Horsemen to remain undefeated and move into first place in the division, while beating a Lexington team who was coming off the national championship from the season before, and had a 10 game winning streak dating back to the previous year. The Evansville BlueCats will look for similar success at home this Saturday.
Evansville BlueCats Head Coach John Hart said, "We're looking forward to the opportunity to play at home again and getting back in front of our fans. I know our players are excited about it and we expect it to be a good ball game with a very talented team like Lexington. They do a lot of good things on the football field, we've had a good week at practice and we'll be ready to go on Saturday."
Dale Jennings and Sean Bennett lead the BlueCats offensive attack. Jennings currently leads the league with 9 touchdowns so far this season and is one of only four players in the league to score a touchdown rushing, receiving, and on a kick return. In fact, Jennings 54-yard kickoff return against the Omaha Beef is the longest in BlueCats history. Receiver Sean Bennett has caught a team-high 18 passes for 283 yards this season, and Levron Williams adds 14 pass receptions and 4 receiving touchdowns to the team's offensive attack.
The defense is being anchored by defensive end Demoine Adams and linebacker John Winchester. Winchester leads the league with 7 tackles for loss and owns a league leading average of nearly 9 tackles per game. Adams leads the league in sacks with 3 already this season, and is third in the UIF with 5.5 tackles for loss.
Evansville kicker Ton-Ton Luzayadio is also having a spectacular season, leading the UIF in field goals made, field goal percentage, and he currently sits in third place in points scored with 49. In only four weeks of play, he's won player of the week honors twice from the league, and has already broken numerous team records, including most field goals in a season.
This week against Lexington, the Harley Davidson motorcycles from ABATE of Indiana - Region 8 will return to Roberts Stadium. They will be on hand and participate in the BlueCats pre-game ceremonies.
In honor of Saturday's game being student night, the halftime entertainment will feature area high school quarterbacks facing off in the Tri-State quarterback passing challenge.
The Gus Doerner Charity football toss will once again be taking place at halftime. Before the game and during the first half of all 2006 home games, fans can purchase footballs to be "tossed" at targets on the field during halftime for a chance to win prizes from Gus Doerner sports. Saturday's charity is the Muscular Dystrophy Association. All proceeds from Saturday night's edition of the charity football toss will go to the M.D.A.
Kickoff on Saturday will be at 7:05pm. The gates at Roberts Stadium will open at 6pm. The BlueCats invite fans to show up early and tailgate with your fellow fans. Free game programs and Evansville BlueCats Spirit Signs will be given away to the first 2000 fans that enter the gates.
