Evansville BlueCats News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN: The Evansville BlueCats (2-5) fell to the Omaha Beef (4-4) Sunday afternoon at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. Evansville fell behind early after fumbles and penalty miscues put the team in a hole in which they were never able to overcome.
The BlueCats offense was especially limited after starting quarterback Haven Mosley left the game with a knee injury in the first quarter. Last time out against Ohio Valley, Mosley earned UIF Player of the Week honors after passing for 239 yards and 4 touchdowns and adding an additional 19 yards and one touchdown on the ground. On Sunday, Mosley only had 2 pass attempts prior to the injury, with one completion for 2 yards.
After the injury to Mosley, Richard Johnson stepped in as quarterback completed 6 of his 13 passes for 59 yards, 2 touchdowns, and one interception. Johnson was also the team's leading rusher against the Beef with 36 yards. Running back Ray Kirkley was held to just 6 yards and a touchdown on 9 carries and Michael Cosey rushed for 17 yards on 3 carries.
Four different BlueCats had pass receptions against the Beef, led by running back Ray Kirkley who had 3 receptions for 30 yards. Dale Jennings had 2 receptions for 20 yards and a touchdown, giving him 50 touchdowns for his career and 46 touchdowns since the BlueCats joined the UIF. Levron Williams had 2 receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown with his touchdown coming on a 4th quarter pass from AJ Bryant on Bryant's only pass attempt of the night.
Running back Michael Cosey had 2 pass receptions for 21 yards, and nearly scored touchdowns on both of them. Richard Johnson found Cosey rolled out in the flat for a 2-yard touchdown in 3rd quarter and Cosey nearly scored on a fake field goal attempt after a shovel pass from Tarron Acuff. Cosey took the shovel pass and then took off around the left side bouncing off defenders and breaking several tackles before being brought down just short of the goal line after gaining 19 yards on the play.
The defense was led by AJ Bryant who tallied 6.5 tackles, one tackle for loss, and an interception in addition to his 4th quarter touchdown pass. Brian Houston added 6 tackles and recovered a fumble.
The Evansville BlueCats return home next Saturday, May 19th, when they host the Lexington Horsemen at Roberts Stadium. In honor of Armed Forces Day, all active and retired military personnel who arrive in uniform will receive free admission. Military personnel are asked to report to Gate 2 prior to the game to receive their complimentary ticket.
