HOLYOKE, MA-In the biggest game of the season, the Holyoke Blue Sox fell just short offensively and defensively, surrendering a ninth inning run that turned out to be the only tally of the game in a 1-0 loss to the Saratoga Brigade in front of a season-high crowd of 1934 that dropped the team to fifth in the Western Division.

Through eight, the Blue Sox bats were able to put runners on, but not bring them in; the closest they came was when second baseman Joseph Carcone singled to left with shortstop Matt Reida on second, but Reida was cut down at home plate.

Starter Michael Burke dominated the Brigade throughout the game, illustrating his command with a series of punchouts and not issuing a walk. However, a one-out double in the ninth that should never have been, had left fielder Jason Lombardozzi not lost the ball in the lights was the difference. That hit allowed a sacrifice fly to plate the only run, as the Blue Sox left the tying run at second in the home half of the frame, one of 11 runners stranded.

Burke took the loss in the complete game performance, with the one run on five hits and a dozen strikeouts; the win went to Kyle Bagnell, who threw eight shutout innings with 11 hits and five strikeouts, and the save was picked up by Garrett Hayward, who threw a scoreless inning allowing just a walk.

Holyoke returns to action at Joe Wolfe Field tomorrow for a 6:35 PM contest against the North Adams Steeplecats before returning home for a doubleheader against the Vermont Mountaineers on Thursday that begins at 5:00 PM. Gates will open at 4:00 PM for the doubleheader, which is fan appreciation day.
