Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - The Wilmington Blue Rocks finished the 2009 season with the most wins in the Carolina League. To generate that kind of success obviously you need a roster laden with talent, and the Blue Crew certainly enjoyed just that. Two of those players were recently honored by MiLB.com on its list of the 50 best prospects in all of Minor League Baseball.
Mike Moustakas, who manned third base for the Blue Crew in 2009, checked in at No. 32, while left-handed pitcher Mike Montgomery was 43rd.
Moustakas, who entered last season as the top prospect in the Kansas City system according to Baseball America, hit the most home runs by a Blue Rock in a decade with 16. The powerful California native was the Royals' top pick of the 2007 draft (No. 2 overall). Besides his prodigious power, Moustakas finished the season second in the Kansas City organization with 86 RBIs and tied for fourth in the Carolina League with 50 extra-base hits.
Montgomery did not arrive on the Riverfront until July 22, but he immediately made his presence felt. The southpaw did not allow a hit through four innings of his first career Advanced-A start, and continued to shine as he helped anchor the Rocks' stretch run to a second-half C.L. North championship. He finished his season with a 4-1 mark in Wilmington and a 2.25 ERA. The effort was enough to earn him the coveted top prospect status in the Kansas City system by Baseball America entering 2010.
Two potential Blue Rocks also made the list, as catcher Wil Myers was No. 33 and right-handed pitcher Aaron Crow was No. 41.
Myers was the Royals' third round pick in 2009 (91st overall). Kansas City selected him out of high school and got him signed in time to make 84 at-bats in his debut professional season. And while it was a limited sample he excelled, batting.369 in 22 games with five home runs, 18 RBIs and a.679 slugging percentage.
Crow was drafted by the Washington Nationals in 2008, but when he failed to come to terms on a contract, the Royals scooped him up with their first-round selection in 2009. The right-hander did not agree to a deal in time to see any regular-season action in the Kansas City system, but he did make his professional debut in the Arizona Fall League where he walked only two batters and whiffed 12 in 15.1 innings pitched.
The Blue Rocks will open play in 2010 on April 8 in Myrtle Beach, SC against the Pelicans (Atlanta Braves). The home opener comes on April 16 with the first of a record 15 fireworks shows at Frawley Stadium this season as the Blue Crew hosts the Potomac Nationals (Washington Nationals). Every Friday in 2010 will have post-game fireworks at Frawley.
