Blue Crabs Take Battle with Barnstormers
May 25, 2018 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(Waldorf, MD.) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (9-17) took the series opener against the Lancaster Barnstormers (18-7) 2-1, winning a tight game against the Atlantic League leaders this season.
After 1-2-3 inning from Casey Delgado (2-2) started the night, the Blue Crabs offense took an early lead with a run in the bottom of the inning. Johnny Bladel was hit by a pitch as the leadoff man, and moved up to second on a throwing error from the pitcher Joe Gardner (2-2). After a walk to Ryan Strausborger, Teodoro Martinez doubled down the right field line to easily bring Bladel around for the opening run in the game.
After cruising through the first two innings, Delgado worked into a jam in the third inning. Vladimir Frias doubled to start the inning, putting the first runner in scoring position on the night for the Barnstormers. After a popup and a flyout retired the next two batters, back-to-back walks loaded the bases for the cleanup hitter Joey Terdoslavich. After a brief mound visit, Delgado took just one pitch to force a flyout to left field from Terdoslavich and strand all three runners.
After two more runners were left on base in the fourth inning for Lancaster, they tied up the game with one in the top of the fifth. Darian Sandford started the inning with single, immediately stealing second before a walk to Tyler Bortnick put two men on base. A double steal ensued, as the throw to third from the catcher skipped by the third baseman to allow Sandford to score and tie the game.
After Delgado blanked the Barnstormers in the top of the sixth, the team retook the lead for their starter in the bottom half. Angel Songco singled with one out to put the go-ahead run on base. A popup to shortstop recorded the second out, but an ill-advised throw to first from Frias led to an error that advanced Songco to scoring position. Cory Vaughn came through with a two-out double, easily scoring Songco to put Delgado in line for the win.
The bullpen took over from there, as Sam Runion and Craig Stem combined to work two straight scoreless innings to maintain the lead. Southern Maryland then turned the one-run advantage over to All-Star closer Cody Eppley (S,1), making his season debut. The right-hander worked a clean inning, retiring the side in order to notch his first save of the season in the 2-1 victory.
The Blue Crabs return to action Saturday, May 25th as they continue the series against the division-leading Barnstormers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. on Saturday at Regency Furniture Stadium.
