(New Britain, CT) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (25-32) defeated the New Britain Bees (29-29) 6-4 at New Britain Stadium on Friday night to take the opener of a three-game weekend series in the Hardware City.

New Britain starting pitcher Mark Hamburger (5-5) suffered the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits in five and two-thirds innings pitched, walking four and striking out three. Southern Maryland starting pitcher Craig Stem (3-3) earned the win by firing five scoreless innings on four hits surrendered, walking one and striking out three. Cody Eppley closed the door in the bottom half of the ninth inning for his team-leading fifth save of the campaign.

Trailing 6-0 in the home half of the sixth inning, New Britain sent seven batters to the plate, scoring four runs on three hits to get to within 6-4. Darren Ford began the rally with a leadoff walk, and came across the plate when Jason Rogers singled to get the Bees on the scoreboard for the first time on the evening. Matt Tuiasosopo concluded the big frame for the home team-with a three-run blast to the opposite field in right center versus Blue Crabs reliever Shane Watson, his third big fly of the season and second multi-RBI game of the year, both coming by way of three runs driven home. The comeback would fall just short as the quartet of Jason Creasy, Sam Runion, Ryan Chaffee, and Eppley would not surrender a run on just one hit across the final three and one-third innings of the ballgame, striking out four. Rogers, Reid Brignac, and Jonathan Galvez each had a pair of hits in the loss. Photo provided courtesy of Joe Doll.

The Bees continue their series with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at New Britain Stadium on Saturday, June 30th. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. It will be Faith and Family Night. Enjoy post-game fireworks and five dollar Coors Light Drafts at any concession stand, presented by Schaller Auto Group and Coors Light.
