
Blue Claws Crawl Past Gnats 3-2

SAVANNAH, GA â The Savannah Sand Gnats (16-20) could not overcome an early 3-0 deficit and went on to lose to the Lakewood Blue Claws (13-24) tonight 3-2 at Historic Grayson Stadium. Blue Claws second baseman Terry Jones went 2 for 4 at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored, and one RBI. With the Blue Claws clinging to a 1-0 lead and two outs in the top of the fourth, Sand Gnat starter Jason Bergmann walked designated hitter Ryan Barthelemy. Jones then lined his second double of the game to the gap in left centerfield scoring Barthelemy. Bryan Hansen would then line a single to left field scoring Jones giving the Blue Claws a 3-0 advantage. The Sand Gnats would put their only runs of the game on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Second baseman Marco Yepez led off the inning with a solid single to right field. After first baseman Larry Broadway popped up to short, Chad Chop lined a two-run home run to left field bringing the Sand Gnats to within a run at 3-2. Blue Claw starter Francisco Butto (2-2) pitched five innings only allowing two runs on five hits and picked up the win. Victor Menocal pitched a scoreless ninth inning earning his first save of the season. Blue Claw right fielder Andre Marshall was 3 for 3 with three singles. Bergmann (3-3) got the loss for the Sand Gnats pitching 6.2 innings allowing three runs, two of which were earned and struck out six. Chop's homer was his third on the season. The Sand Gnats will play game two of a four game series against the Blue Claws tomorrow night with the first pitch scheduled for 6:35pm. Tomorrow is 2 for 1 Tuesdays presented by Connect Savannah.
