Blue Anchors Lose Extra-Innings Heartbreaker to Bucks

Alexandria, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors were swept in a two-game series by the Waterloo Bucks in 10 innings Monday night by a score of 6-4 at Knute Nelson Memorial Park. The Anchors are now 11-19 in the second half and 21-43 overall.

The Bucks were able to get on the board early against Tyler Beck as David Kerian led off the game with a solo-homer to right field giving them a 1-0 lead.

Alexandria was able to grab the lead in the third against J.T. Miller in the third. Georgie Salem led off the inning with a single and Kris Goodman collected a single of his own. Albert Baur grounded into a double play but Tim Cusick launched the first pitch he saw deep to centerfield for a two-run homer putting the Blue Anchors ahead 2-1.

The long ball trend continued in the top of the sixth. Chesny Young reached on a Keegan Dale error and John Ziznewski hit a homer out to centerfield for a two-run blast giving Waterloo a 3-2 advantage.

The Blue Anchors regained the lead in the sixth. Baur started the inning with a single and went to second on a one-out Ryan Blanchard walk. Gerrion Grim came in relief of Miller and walked Shea Molitor to load the bases. He got Dale to ground into a fielder's choice for two outs in the inning but Michael Barash lined a single into centerfield scoring two and giving Alexandria a lead at 4-3.

Brandon Johnson was in to close the game for the Blue Anchors but with two-outs Kevin Needham hit a two-out solo shot to tie the game at four.

In the tenth inning, Dominic Reed came in relief and hit Young with a pitch and walked Ziznewski with one out. Marcos Calderon struck out but with two outs, Will Sparks singled in Young to give Waterloo a 5-4 lead. They added an insurance run when Kyle Pollock singled to center brining home Ziznewski building their lead to 6-4.

Beck delivered a great start pitching seven innings allowing just three runs, two earned, on six hits with four strikeouts. In two innings, Johnson gave up one run on three hits, one walk and a strikeout. Reed (0-1) was the losing pitcher going one innings giving up two runs on two hits with a walk allowed and one punch out.

Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Tyler Beck (P) - In likely his final start at the Shipyard, the Augsburg northpaw delivered a gem. He attacked the zone throwing 68 percent strikes and lowered his season ERA to 4.41.

Notes: Beck went a season-high seven innings...It is his fourth quality start of the season...For Cusick, that was his ninth homer of 2013...Kris Goodman now has a six-game hitting streak...The Bucks won the season-series six games to one...The Blue Anchors continue the final home stand with two games against the La Crosse Loggers Tuesday night...Tuesday means it's Bark in the Park sponsored by Lea's Pet Products and all dogs are welcome to the Shipyard...On the mound the projected starter is Corey Fitzgerald (0-7, 6.90)...The game, starting at 7:05 p.m., can be seen live at www.youtube.com/user/NorthwoodsLeague.
