Baker Shines in Win

(Rochester,MN)-- Tyler Baker (Wichita State) picked up four hits for the Rochester Honkers in a 14-10 win over the Battle Creek Bombers on Tuesday, August 6, at Mayo Field.

Jared Foster started the top of the first inning for the Bombers with a sharp single to left field and Kade Scivicque followed with a two-run homerun over the left field fence to take an early lead. Drew Charlie added a homerun of his own to increase the lead to 3-0.

Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) started the bottom of the first inning with the double to right field and Caleb Dugas (Copiah-Lincoln Community College) followed with a single to give the Honkers an early scoring threat. Hanawahine came in to score on a RBI single from Baker. Matt Halloran (Minnesota) reached on an infield single to load the bases for Kevin Barker (UC Davis,) who missed a grand slam by just a few feet as he delivered a two-run double off of the left field fence to tie the game. Halloran would later score on a sacrifice fly from Jared Deacon (Cal State Fullerton) to give the Honkers a 4-3 lead after one inning.

Scivicque and Charlie came through with two-out, two-run singles in the top of the second inning to regain the lead at 7-4 for Battle Creek.

Dugas doubled with one out in the bottom of the second inning and came in to score on when Baker launched a two-run homerun, his third of the season, over the wall in right field. Reid Roper (Illinois) added a homerun, his first of the season, to tie the score at 7-7 after just two innings of play.

The Bombers regained the lead at 9-7 in the top of the third inning thanks to a two-run homerun from Gabe Acevedo.

Dugas reached on a lead-off walk to start the bottom of the fifth inning and Max Murphy (Bradley) followed with a double to set up a two-run from Baker to tie the game at 9-9. Murphy doubled agian in the bottom of the sixth inning and Baker followed with a single to set the table for a two-run double from Halloran to right-center field to break the tie and gain an 11-9 lead.

Rochester added three insurance runs in the next two innings thanks to RBIs from Dugas, Murphy, and Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) to increase the lead to five runs at 14-9.

Seth Fuller (Black Hawk College) earned the win (3-3) for the Honkers as he allowed just one hit in 2.2 innings of work in relief. Bryant Westra took the loss (0-1) for the Bombers, as he allowed four runs on six hits in three innings. Rochester's starting pitcher Tyler Eppler (Sam Houston State) allowed nine runs on eight hits in two-plus innings of work, but Fuller, Nathan Roth (Doane College,) and Roper combined to allow just one unearned run on three hits in seven innings of work. The Honkers pitching staff recorded 12 strikeouts on the night.

Baker led the Honkers offense with four hits, five RBI, and three runs scored. Dugas added three hits on the night and scored three times as well.

The two teams will wrap-up the season series on Wednesday, August 7, at 7:05 p.m. at Mayo Field. Derrick Hadley (Sam Houston State) is scheduled to start for Rochester (9-21, 27-38.) Alex Tukey (Minnesota) is slated to start for Battle Creek (13-18, 27-38.) The Honkers will continue a six-game home stand to conclude the regular season this week as they host Lakeshore and Duluth.
