Blue Anchors Fall to Stingers 5-2

Willmar, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors fell to the Willmar Stingers by a score of 5-2 Wednesday night at Bill Taunton Stadium. Alexandria now has a record of 5-21 on the season.
The Stingers got on the board first against Blue Anchor starter Corey Fitzgerald in the bottom of the second inning. Michael Suchy doubled to start the inning and went to third on a ground out by Zack Tillery. First baseman Nick Halamandaris doubled to right field to bring home Suchy to give Willmar the 1-0 lead.
Max Kuhn singled with one out in the third inning for Willmar and Suchy drew a two-out walk to put two runners on. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position and Tillery doubled both runners pushing the Stingers' lead to 3-0.
The Blue Anchors got within one in the top of the sixth against Stinger starter Sheldon Lee. Ryan Blanchard reached first on an error by the second baseman Jake Gronsky and Tim Cusick followed with a walk. Andrew Mulato sacrificed both runners into scoring position and a single by Aaron Gretz scored both runners making the score in favor of Willmar, 3-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Stingers responded. Halamandaris doubled again to start the inning and Max Dutto singled to score Halamandaris extending Willmars lead to 4-2. After a double play, Logan Moon doubled and stole third. Gretz, the catcher, tried to pick Moon off second but his throw went into the outfield allowing Moon to score and Willmar led 5-2.
Taking the loss was Fitzgerald (0-3). He pitched 5.2 innings allowing five runs on 10 hits and four walks. Andy Johnson pitched 2.1 scoreless walking to and beaning one while striking out four.
Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Aaron Gretz (C) - Gretz had two hits in Wednesday's contest and both RBI. The Ohio State catcher is now batting .276 on the season.
Notes: Blanchard was 1-4 and his hitting streak is now at eight games...Fitzgerald has gone at least five innings in five of his six games pitched...Outfielder Georgie Salem has had a hit in all eight games played for the Blue Anchors this season...Andrew Sohn had two hits in the loss to Willmar and leads the Northwoods League with 39 hits this summer...Alexandria is 0-6 against Willmar in 2013...The Blue Anchors have a double header on Thursday with the first game starting at 6:05 p.m...Chase Rihtarchik (2-0, 2.01) is on the bump in game one and Spencer Koopmans (0-0, 3.00) will pitch game two for Alexandria...Starting at 5:00 p.m and until game time, all food and beverages are just $1 with the purchase of a ticket at Knute Nelson Memorial Park...For those who can't make it to the Shipyard, the game can be seen live at www.youtube.com/user/NorthwoodsLeague.
