Blowfish Now 4-5 Overall After 9-8 Win over Gastonia
June 5, 2014 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Lexington County Blowfish News Release
COLUMBIA, SC - With a good crowd on hand for USO of South Carolina Volunteer Appreciation Night, the Columbia Blowfish returned home for a tilt against the Gastonia Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies came in winners of four in a row, but a lot of offense early on for Columbia would halt the Gastonia streak.
The Blowfish scored in each of the first four innings of play on Thursday night. JD Crowe (Francis Marion) helped get momentum going early, as he reached base in his first four plate appearances. Crowe finished 4 for 5 at the dish with 3 doubles, 2 runs scored and 2 batted in.
Crowe is now hitting .428 on the year in a Blowfish uniform.
Offensively, the Blowfish scored 9 runs in the first 4 innings of action at Historic Capital City Stadium, which ultimately proved to be enough.
Trevor Hutto (Francis Marion) picked up his second win of the year. Hutto went 6 innings for the win, striking out 3. Hutto, now 2-0, has 17 strikeouts in 17.2 innings pitched.
The win for Columbia was their fourth on the season, and they improve to 4-5 overall including a 2-0 mark against Gastonia thus far.
Allen Staton finished the night 1 for 3, scoring a run and knocking 2 runs in as well. Stephen Dowling's (USC-Upstate) only hit of the night was a two-run dinger over the left field fence, and Brandon Burris (Spartanburg Methodist) knocked in a run and scored 2 in his first game of the year.
Gastonia made a surge late, as they pushed across 4 runs in the top of the 9th, which were charged to Stuart Pound in relief.
Evan Raynor (Florence Darlington Tech) came in to close the door in the top of the 9th inning, however, as he worked just two thirds of an inning for the save. It's Raynor's 4th save of the year, which leads the Coastal Plain League to date.
The Blowfish run their record to 4-5 overall and face off against Gastonia again tomorrow night at Gastonia looking to get back to .500 on the year.
The Blowfish play again at home on Saturday night against Forest City, where it is Military Appreciation Night and Ike Night at "The Cap," put on with the help of the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce. Gates open at 6:00 pm, with a 7:05pm first pitch and fireworks to follow!
