Lexington County Blowfish News Release
COLUMBIA, SC - The Columbia Blowfish, looking to avoid their first losing streak of the young season, could not complete the comeback on Friday night at Historic Capital City Stadium, falling 5-3 to the Fayetteville Swampdogs.
The first Friday night home game of this young season for Columbia, the Blowfish took the field against Fayetteville on "Frozen Night" with an announced crowd of 2,410. The Blowfish were also recognizing the Greater Lexington Chamber of Commerce for their hard work and service to the community, as well as hosting many young fans from Lexington County schools for another Reading Program evening of family fun at the ballpark.
Michael Carpin, who just finished his freshman season at the University of Georgia, got the start on the mound. Carpin gave up 8 hits and 2 earned runs in 4 innings of work while striking out 4 batters. Allen Staton led the way offensively, going 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored.
Fayetteville started off with 5 hits in the first two innings, but left the bases loaded in the top of the first and the top of the second inning.
Mike Bell advanced and then scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the first to plate the first run for Columbia. Fayetteville added a run in the top of the third and fourth innings, but the Blowfish countered right back to tie it in the bottom of the 4th.
The Swampdogs scored what proved to be the difference in the ball game in the top of the 5th inning, plating two runs to make it 4-2.
Down 5-3 in the bottom of the 9th inning, Zach Haralambis hit a pinch-hit one out single. Zachary Paquette singled to center with two men gone, and the Blowfish had runners at first and second with two gone and Allen Staton at the dish.
Staton grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game, however, as the Blowfish failed to complete the comeback.
The Blowfish fall to 1-3 on the year and hit the road again today, May 31th, to take on the Swampdogs against, this time in Fayetteville.
