Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The SwampDogs bats came alive Friday night, as they pounded out 12 hits against the Columbia Blowfish in a 5-3 win at Capital City Stadium. The team had just 13 hits in their first three games.

It was a frustrating start for the SwampDogs, stranding the bases loaded in the first inning, then surrendering a run on a throwing error by third baseman Palmer Page.

The Dogs would leave the bases full again in the second, before finally pushing across the equalizer in the third. First baseman Lane Paul singled to lead off the inning, then advanced to third on a Page double. A groundout from designated hitter Brandon Metoyer plated Paul.

Paul would collect three hits on the game, and Metoyer would have two RBI, and now leads the team with four on the season.

The SwampDogs would plate another in the fourth inning, and two in the fifth, and that was all the support the SwampDogs pitching staff would need.

Starting pitcher Clayton Freimuth went four innings allowing two hits and two unearned runs while striking out three and walking four.

Ben Dartnell came into relieve him and hurled two scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out three, followed up a scoreless inning from Seth Laigast.

Hunter Barnett would run into some trouble in the eighth inning, allowing a double to third baseman Allen Staton, who would come around to score on a two out single by J.D. Crowe, making the score 4-3. He was taken out of the game, and Ryan Domingue would record the third out of the inning.

The run allowed by Barnett broke a 15.2 inning scoreless streak for the SwampDogs bullpen to start the season.

In the ninth inning, the SwampDogs would add an insurance run as catcher Jacob Whiting would lace an RBI single into right center, plating centerfielder David LaFleur. LaFleur scored two runs on the game and made a great diving catch in centerfield in the second inning.

Deshorn Lake then came on to try to shut the door in the ninth. He allowed one batter to reach on an error and a hit, which brought up the winning run with two outs. Lake was able to get Staton to ground into a fielder's choice to end the game.

The winning pitcher was Dartnell, who improves to 1-0, the loser was Colie Bowers, who falls to 0-1. Lake's save was his second of the season.

The SwampDogs and Blowfish square off again Saturday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium on the first fireworks night of the season at The Swamp. For tickets and more information, call the SwampDogs offices at 910-426-5900.
