Green Bay Blizzard News Release
The Green Bay Blizzard has announced that a press conference will be held in the Resch Center Atrium at 5:30pm to present former Green Bay Packers QB Don Majkowski. The "Majik Man" will be this evening's Honorary Captain as the Blizzard takes on the Birmingham Steeldogs on "A Night of Majik," sponsored by Piggly Wiggly.
Drafted in the 10th round out of Virginia, Majkowski played for the Packers from 1987-1992. During his Packers career, he led the team to the playoffs in 1989, the same season he was voted to the Pro Bowl. He and WR Sterling Sharpe were a deadly duo, teaming up for numerous TDs, most notably the winning score in the infamous "Instant Replay Game."
In 1989, the Packers were hosting their greatest nemeses, the Chicago Bears. In the waning seconds the Packers trailed 13-7, when Majkowski hit Sharpe with a 14-yard TD pass to tie the game. There was a flag on the play, however, as it was ruled that Majkowski was beyond the lone of scrimmage when he threw the pass. With the immortal words "After further review..." the referee overturned the original call and ruled the play a TD. The PAT was successful and the Packers defeated the Bears 14-13, ending a long losing streak to the Monsters of the Midway. To this day the Chicago Bears do not recognize the play as a TD, and in their yearly Media Guide an asterisk appears next to the game result.
On July 23rd Majkowski will be inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame, and will be recognized for his accomplishments while wearing the Green & Gold. He will be joined by RB Edgar Bennett, who played for the Packers from 1992-1996, and currently serves as the Packers' Running Backs Coach.
Tonight Majkowski will be on hand to sign autographs for fans from 6:00-6:30pm. The first 1,000 fans age 14 and under will receive a "Majik Man" Bobble-Head, courtesy of Piggly Wiggly. As the evening's Honorary Captain, Majkowski will take part in the pre-game events. He will present the Game Ball to the official, and then he will flip the coin to begin the game.
The Blizzard would like to extend special thanks to Piggly Wiggly for their sponsorship of "A Night of Majik," and the opportunity to bring a hero of Green Bay football back to Titletown.
