Green Bay Blizzard News Release

After a heart wrenching overtime loss last week versus the Lexington Horsemen, the Green Bay Blizzard gritted their teeth, dug down deep and put their sights on the archrival Louisville Fire. In front of a near capacity crowd of 7,110 at U.S. Cellular Field at the Resch Center the Blizzard beat the Fire 33-20 and put themselves in a great position for a home playoff game when the af2 playoffs commence on August 1st.

As Blizzard fans packed into the Resch Center, the Louisville Fire were quick to get on the board with a touchdown pass from QB Danny Southwick (12-24, 188 yds, 2 TD, 3 INT) to WR Dewalt Lonnell (6-100, 2 TD). Blizzard QB Brian Villanueva (7-15, 1 TD, 2 INT) and WR Scott Burnoski (7-84, 1 TD) were quick to answer with a 30 yard touchdown pass of their own. Louisville would answer again on another touchdown pass from Southwick to bring the score to 13-7 Louisville at the end of the first.

The second quarter was a defensive and offensive showcase for the Blizzard when the defense stuffed Louisville for a safety at 10:13 to bring the score to 13-9. The Blizzard also added another touchdown from Blizzard FB Tyre Young to end the half 17-13 in favor of the Blizzard.

The next two quarters cemented the Blizzard win from both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball as Blizzard QB Colin Drafts ran it in from 6 yards out. On the defensive side, DL and ADT Defensive Player of the Game Odell Willis added his second safety of the evening and LB Robert Garth recovered a Fire fumble and took it 19 yards to the end zone for a 33-13 lead. Louisville would add a touchdown in the fourth on a 2 yard run by QB Nick Roberts but the lead was already secured.

The win for Green Bay puts them in a great position in the playoff standings and an even better chance to host a first round playoff game. A Lexington loss tomorrow night versus the Iowa Barnstormers would put the Blizzard in sole possession of first place in the Midwest Division heading into the final game of the regular season.

The Green Bay Blizzard would like to thank all the great fans for a tremendous home regular season. Playoff tickets are on sale for a possible home playoff game. For more information or to purchase your tickets, contact the Ticketstar Box Office at (920)494-3401.
