Bakersfield Blitz News Release
Bossier City, LA - Jason Thomas went 18-for-21 with seven touchdown passes and added one on the ground to lead the Bakersfield Blitz (2-3) to a 75-40 thrashing of the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings (1- 5) on Saturday night. The point total was the highest in Bakersfield Arena Football history.
Bakersfield's defense had to be strong early, holding the 6th best offense in the league to just three first quarter points on three possessions. Jason Thomas hooked up with OS Rennard Reynolds for Bakersfield's first score of the ballgame. The 20- yard completion made it 7-3 Blitz at the end of the first quarter.
Bossier-Shreveport finally got into the end zone early in the second stanza with a keeper by the QB Tim Hicks. Nathan Munson provided more offense for the Blitz, taking a screen pass and rolling 30 yards down the middle of the field to make it 14-10. Eric Mahanke caught another touchdown for Bakersfield, who had just three first half possessions, scoring a touchdown on each. The Blitz 'D' was big as well in the first half, putting up two touchdowns of their own. Jabari Jackson ran back a fumble recovery for a score and Nathan Munson picked off a Hicks pass in the final seconds and ran it in to make it 35-17 at the half.
The Blitz added to their lead with a pair of touchdowns sandwiched around a Battle Wings field goal. Thomas rushed in a one-yard score on the opening possession of the second half. Mahanke caught his second touchdown of the game to make it 49-20. A 48-yard connection from Hicks to Reggie Perkins cut the lead to 23 at the end of three.
Thomas didn't have a problem airing the ball out on this night. His 30-yard bomb on the second play of the fourth quarter gave Mahanke his third TD grab of the contest. A third touchdown pass by Thomas in the fourth quarter gave him seven in the game and pulled Bakersfield up over 60 points for the first time of the year. A couple of late scores padded the final margin of victory, capped by an interception by Munson with second remaining in the contest, 75-40.
Friday night football in Bakersfield continues next weekend as the Blitz take on the Tulsa Talons at 7:00 p.m. on May 13th. That night, the Blitz are guaranteeing a victory against their West Division rivals, and if the Blitz don't defeat Tulsa that night, everyone in attendance will get a free ticket to their next home game the following week against rival San Diego.
