Bakersfield Blitz News Release

BAKERSFIELD, CA (April 11, 2002) – The Bakersfield Blitz' inaugural home game on April 20th, against the Louisville Fire, will have a party atmosphere as the home schedule kicks off for the 2002 season. Local band Mento Buru, a Bakersfield favorite for over 10 years, will lend their musical talents to the pre-game tailgate party in the Plaza in front of Centennial Garden from 5 – 6:30 pm.

"There will entertainment of all kinds on the 20th," said General Manager Brad Hoffman. "Obviously there is the football game, but we encourage everybody to come down early, listen to the band, get something to eat and drink, and just have fun. There's something for everybody."

Mento Buru is tabbed as an explosive 8-piece band that cleverly combines Jamaican SKA, rock, Latin jazz, funk and reggae. Their eclectic mixture creates a refreshing new musical experience not soon to be forgotten. Since it's inception in 1991, Mento Buru's sound has excited audiences of all ages. The charisma, stage exhibition and diverse musical skills of the band have built their loyal following.

Lead singer Matt Munoz said the band loves to be a part of the community, and opening for the Bakersfield Blitz was an easy choice.

"We're excited to be a part of this," said Munoz. "We were like ‘yeah', of course we'll play. We were going to go to the game anyway."

Along with the music, there will be barbecued hot dogs and hamburgers, beer and soda, and face painting and a bounce house for the kids. Kick-off for the game is set for 7 PM.

More than two million fans have attended arenafootball2 games in the league's two-year history. In 2000, af2 began its inaugural season with 15 teams. The league expanded to 28 teams in 2001, making it the fastest single-league expansion in the history of sports.

Season tickets are now on sale and available by calling (661) 634-9132 or 1-866-GOBLITZ.
