Blazing Day For The Blazers
October 22, 2008 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
West Virginia Blazers News Release
Bluefield, WV. The ABA WV Blazers were shining before the sun was on Bridge Day, 2008. At 630am, the Blazers were on their way to set up for the 50/50 fundraiser for the Chamber of Commerce in Fayette County, WV. The Chamber sponsors Bridge Day annually, which brings approximately 160,000 people to the small town of Fayetteville, WV and the New River Gorge. Bridge Day is the largest BASE jumping event in the world, held on the third Saturday in October every year. 450 base jumpers enjoyed the 876 feet jump to the bottom of the New River Gorge.
Fayetteville was shining also, with beautiful weather and scenery as spectators from all over the globe enjoyed watching the base jumpers in person or on the large screen provided this year for viewing the jumpers. They also had access to a variety of foods and merchandise from visiting vendors.
The Blazers sold 50/50 tickets for the Chamber to help fund Bridge Day, and enjoyed providing tattoos for children and giving away merchandise to attendees of all ages. Over $1000 was raised to help with Bridge Day 2009! Approximately 4000 children received WV Blazers tattoos, most put on the children by one of the Blazers or by visiting local Queens and Princesses. (Check the Blazers website for great photos of Bridge Day and Afterfest (www.wvblazers.com).
The Blazers rounded out the day as VIP guests at the "Afterfest" at the Good Evening Ranch in Canvas WV. Ricky Skaggs and Tony Rice were in concert at the Ranch. The Blazers visited with the Afterfest attendees and provided more fun freebies for fans - glow necklaces were the hit of the evening, next to the Blazers.
Both opportunities to meet and make fans while helping to raise money for a great event were enjoyed by all the Blazers.
The Blazers will be at the Carmike Cinemas in Bluefield WV on October 24 and 25. On November 5, the Blazers will take on the Harlem Starz from Houston, TX at the Fayette County Memorial Building in Fayetteville, WV (game time 7pm, tickets $8). This event is a fundraiser for the Fayetteville High School Basketball Program. On November 6, the Blazers and Starz will play at the Bluefield Middle School to raise money for the middle school (game time 7pm, tickets $8).
The 2008-2009 season is going to be a GREAT one for the Blazers - plan to see them at the Raleigh County Armory and Convention Center; the schedule is on their website, www.wvblazers.com or visit www.abalive.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
