Blaze Win Exhibition Contest

BLOOMINGTON - The Bloomington Blaze, fueled by Mid-Illini Credit Union, won their only exhibition game before the 2012-13 season with a 7-5 decision over the Missouri Mavericks on Friday at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

The Mavericks opened the scoring only 51 seconds into the contest when Kevin Miller connected from the deep slot, with assists given to Brandon Smith and Derek Leblanc. The Blaze answered at 3:23 of the opening period as Jesse Dudas connected on the power play, assisted by David Gilbert and Nicholas Rioux to even the score at 1-1. The Blaze captured a 2-1 lead at the 12:11 mark of the opening chapter when Kyle Bochek slapped a rebound from a Travis Granbois shot into an open net. Another power play goal at 16:09 of the first period put the Blaze ahead 3-1 when Bochek cleaned up another Granbois rebound.

The Blaze built the lead to 4-1 when Charlie Townsend took a pass at the doorstep and scored at the 10:42 mark of the second period, assisted by Bochek and Granbois.

Missouri cut their deficit to 4-2 on a top-shelf unassisted drive from the slot by Riley Emmerson. The Blaze extended the lead to 5-2 as Sebastien Trudeau found the back of the net, assisted by Jesse Dudas, 6:44 into the final period. The Blaze scored just 54 seconds later when Chris Benias tallied an unassisted goal, but the Mavericks answered 20 seconds later with 12:00 left in regulation as Kellan Tochkin lit the lamp assisted by Derek Leblance. The Mavs cut the game to 6-4 on a rebound goal by Tochkin at 13:24 of the third period, and Pierce added a power play goal at 15:47 to cut the Mavericks deficit to 7-5.

Each team split the game with their goaltenders. Pier-Olivier Pelletier played the first half of the contest for the Blaze and made seven saves while giving up one goal, and Dan Dunn completed the contest by making 12 saves on 16 shots.

The Blaze are next in action at home next Friday and Saturday, October 19 and 20, as they open the regular Central Hockey League season with contests against the Rapid City Rush. On Friday, 1,500 magnetic Blaze schedules will be given away sponsored by Premier Orthopedics, and 1,500 adult replica jerseys will be given away on Saturday courtesy of Mid-Illini Credit Union.
