Blaze Sign Collins, Sutton

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Blaze coach Ernesto Purnsley announced Thursday the signing of former Southern University defensive tackle Jacoby Collins and former UTEP wide receiver David Sutton.

Collins (6-foot-5, 370 pounds), a native of Opelousas, La., played three seasons for the Jaguars. In his first two seasons he played offensive guard. He missed the 2007 season with an injury.

In his final season in 2008, he recorded seven tackles, a sack, pass break-up, pass deflection and quarterback hurry for the Jaguars, who finished the season 6-5.

Professionally, he played defensive line for the Peoria Pirates of the af2 in 2009.

Collins, who didn't play organized football until he was in junior high because of an enlarged heart, also participated in track at Opelousas High, which won back-to-back state titles in 1999-00. He never finished lower than fourth in four state meets. As a senior in 2002, he finished second with a throw of just over 54 feet.

Sutton, (6-6, 225) spent time with the Miami Dolphins of the NFL and was a practice player for the Utah Blaze in 2008.

In two seasons at UTEP, Sutton, a native of Westminster, Calif., recorded six catches for 80 yards and a touchdown. He also played one season at Lincoln University (Mo.) where he set a freshman record with an 89-yard touchdown reception. He ended the 2003 season at Lincoln with 16 catches for 445 yards and a touchdown.

At Compton Community College he finished with 15 catches for 400 yards and two touchdowns.
