Utah Blaze News Release
SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah Blaze has agreed to terms on a contract with WR Brandon Thompkins, the team announced today. Formerly a division rival, Thompkins joins the Blaze after spending his first two AFL seasons with the Spokane Shock.
"When we played Brandon at home last season, he scored seven touchdowns against us," said Head Coach Ron James. "I'm excited to have him on our side for a change. Brandon provides our offense with a lot of open-field speed. He's a veteran receiver that knows how to get open."
Thompkins (5-10, 185, Arkansas State) started 12 games for Spokane in 2012 and finished second on the team with 76 receptions for 907 yards and 26 touchdowns. A versatile playmaker, he also added six more scores on 18 rushing attempts.
As a rookie in 2011, Thompkins played for the Shock under current Blaze Defensive Coordinator Rob Keefe. Despite playing in only the final four games of the season, Thompkins still managed to catch 17 passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns.
"I'm really excited to play in Utah," Thompkins stated. "Tommy Grady is a great quarterback, and anything is possible with him in there. I think I bring a lot of speed and the ability to make downfield plays to the Blaze. I picked Utah because I have a strong relationship with Coach Keefe, and that relationship made my decision a lot easier."
A native of West Palm Beach, Florida, Thompkins played collegiately at Arkansas State University, where he still holds school records for kickoff returns (123) and kickoff return yardage (2,696).
