SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah Blaze are pleased to announcing the signing of QB Eric Meyer (6-2, 210, Eastern Washington) for the 2011 season. Myer will round out the quarterback signings for 2011, joining QB Tommy Grady (6-7, 250, Utah) and QB Mark Thorson (6-6, 240, Western Oregon).
Meyer joins the Blaze after serving as the back-up quarterback for QB Kyle Rowley and the Arena Bowl XXIII Champion Spokane Shock. He appeared in two games for the Shock, completing 18-of-28 passes for 274 yards, five touchdowns and one interception.
"Meyer is a crucial signing for the Blaze for a lot of reasons, especially the fact he knows my offensive scheme and did well in it last season," said Blaze Offensive Coordinator Matthew Sauk. "He was one on one with Kyle (Rowley) last year and is a proven leader that will bring a great deal of strength to the offense in 2011."
Meyer was a record-setting quarterback for Eastern Washington University where he won the 2005 Walter Payton Award, presented by The Sports Network to the top offensive player in NCAA Division I-AA football. His 166.5 career passing efficiency rating set a record for FCS quarterbacks with at least 400 completions. In 42 games, he passed for 10,261 yards, with 84 touchdown passes and only 17 interceptions He posted 65.7 percent passing accuracy, completing 721-of-1097. His career interception percentage (1.5) also is a Division I-AA record. While at Eastern Washington, he broke eight Eastern Washington career records, five single-season marks and one single-game mark. Meyer was sacked an NCAA low two times mainly due to stellar offensive line.
He was originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the Cincinnati Bengals of the NFL in 2006. Before joining the Shock, Meyer spent time with the Cologne Centurions (NFL Europe), Seattle Seahawks (NFL), Oakland Raiders (NFL) and Hamilton Tiger-Cats (CFL).
