SaberCats Assigned DB Mervin Brookins

SAN JOSE - The San Jose SaberCats today announced the assignment of defensive back Mervin Brookins by the league office, formerly of the ArenaBowl XXIII Champion Spokane Shock. Per team policy, terms were not disclosed.

"Mervin is an athletic, quick defender and is one of the premier return men in the league," Head Coach Darren Arbet said. "He brings experience to our team after winning a championship with the Shock and we are looking forward to him helping us this season."

Brookins, (5-10, 180) played in four games and recorded 17 tackles to go along with two pass breakups. On special teams, he returned 16 kicks for 291 yards with one touchdown. Brookins recorded 16 tackles and two pass breakups during the 2010 postseason. He also contributed 11 kickoff returns for 201 yards, while registering an interception in the ArenaBowl.

Starting the 2010 season with the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz, Brookins played in six games and registered 14 tackles, one pass breakup and forced fumble with two fumble recoveries. In 2009, he played in six games for the af2's Stockton Lightning, recording seven interceptions, seven pass breakups and two fumble recoveries.

Brookins played at Bethel College (KS) of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics prior to playing in the AFL. He played at Sacramento City College (CA) before transferring to Bethel.

A native of Sacramento, he attended Florin High School (CA).
