Bakersfield Blaze News Release
Daniel Renken went 6 strong innings, Kevin Coddington drove in 3, and the Blaze hung on for a much-needed 4-3 win in San Jose over the rival Giants.
The Blaze fell behind early, when Jarrett Parker led off the bottom of the 1st with a 12-pitch at-bat and solo homer off Renken, but from there Daniel settled in nicely.
The righthanded strikeout pitcher ended up going 6 innings, allowing just that one run, fanning 6, but did not factor into the decision.
The Blaze took a 2-1 lead in the 3rd inning when Jorge Jimenez led off the frame with a single and walked in on Kevin Coddington's 2-run homer, but the game was far from over. Despite hanging onto that 2-1 lead for half the game, the Giants did tie it in the 7th when Alex Burg took Scott Gaffney deep.
But the Blaze bounced right back. With 1 out in the 8th, Jimenez singled, and after A.J. Means was inserted as a pinch-runner, Coddington doubled him home for his second go-ahead hit of the night. Devin Lohman added an RBI single off losing pitcher Michael Main (L, 2-4) for a 4-2 edge - a lead the Blaze would need.
The Giants scored once in the ninth on a single, walk, sacrifice and a grounder, but Doug Salinas struck out James Simmons to finish the game and collected his 10th save of the year. Drew Bowman (W, 4-2) pitched 1.1 innings in the 7th and 8th for the win.
The series continues tomorrow at 7pm, with Barry Zito making a rehab start for San Jose, and Tim Crabbe going after him for Bakersfield. The game can be heard live on BakersfieldBlaze.com with Dan Besbris calling all the action every night!
