Blaze Face Tough Weekend

March 13, 2003 - National Women's Basketball League (NWBL)
Chicago Blaze News Release

The Chicago Blaze have been very hot of late, winning their last 6 games. This weekend they will have the daunting task of trying to take down the Birmingham Power (4-5) and the Houston Stealth (3-9) in the same weekend. The Blaze will take on the Power Saturday evening at 7:30 PM and the Stealth on Sunday afternoon at 3PM. Both games will be held at the DePaul Athletic Center.

The records of both the Power and the Stealth are very misleading. Birmingham, who finished the 2002 season with the second best record in the regular season, has been hamstrung by the lack a true inside presence. The Power do however have arguably the best backcourt in the league in Kelly (WNBA Charlotte Sting) and CoCo (WNBA Washington Mystics) Miller. The identical twins are currently averaging a combined 37.3 points and 9 assists a game, a mark that notches up to 44.1 points and 12 assists when playing the Blaze.

The Houston Stealth are in a state of transition. After starting 1-6, the Stealth signed 6'4 forward Michelle Snow (WNBA Houston Comets) and 6'7 center Cori Enghusen (WNBA Houston Comets) last week. The presence of the two post players immediately paid dividends as Houston became the first team to defeat the league leading Springfield Spirit at home. Through her first three games, Snow has averaged 23.3 points and a league-leading 12.7 rebounds a game, while shooting a phenomenal 65% from the field. In addition, the Stealth are led by international superstar Sheryl Swoopes (23.4 points per game) and 2002 Playoff MVP Tamicha Jackson (WNBA Portland Fire).

The Blaze stars, including Dominique Canty (WNBA Detroit Shock), Latonya Johnson (WNBA San Antonio Silver Stars), Camille Cooper (WNBA New York Liberty) and leading scorer Mfon Udoka (Depaul Blue Demons), will certainly have the hands full as they attempt to contain the talent.

The NWBL showcases professional women basketball players across the nation; including players from the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) who choose to stay in the U.S. to play during the off-season. The 2003 season will run from February through April.
