Blaze Can't Solve Rawhide, Lose 4-2

June 16, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

A tighter contest on a beautiful Wednesday night had the same result, as the Visalia Rawhide stymied the Bakersfield Blaze hitters en route to a series-winning 4-2 win at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

The scoring largely occurred right out of the gate in a game that ended up being extremely well-pitched.

For the Blaze, Lukas Schiraldi (L, 0-3) allowed two runs on four hits in the top of the 1st inning, with the Rawhide twice taking advantage of a defensive shift with oddly placed grounders.

For Visalia, newly minted Joel Payamps (W, 1-0) gave those two runs back in the 2nd inning when Jay Baum singled, Tyler Marlette doubled, and Justin Seager hit a deep flyball to plate a run.

It seemed like the contest was on its way to a nice chunk of runs, but the pitchers found grooves on both sides.

Schiraldi allowed one more run in the 4th on a groundout, but otherwise was more efficient before being lifted in the middle innings.

Then, the Blaze pen continued what has been a very impressive run, as Jake Zokan and Kody Kerski combined to allow just one unearned run over the final 4.2 innings of the game.

Unfortunately, it wasn't enough. Payamps settled down after the rocky 2nd and set down 15 Blaze in a row before departing with one out in the 8th, and a combination of Cameron Gann and Bud Jeter (S, 10) finished it off for the visitors.

The homestand completed, the Blaze head on the road for four games going into the All Star break in windy Lancaster. Dan Besbris will have the call on Thursday and Friday, and Dave Gascon will have the call on Saturday and Sunday. All four games will be available at BakersfieldBlaze.com and TuneIn Radio.
