Blast Sweep Season Series against Silver Knights

Syracuse Silver Knights News Release

BALTIMORE, MD - A hat trick from Neto wasn't enough as the Syracuse Silver Knights fell to the Baltimore Blast for the second time in as many nights, 11-6 at 1st Mariner Arena. Stephen DeRoux broke a 6-6 tie with 5:03 left to give the Blast what would prove to be an insurmountable 8-6 lead.

DeRoux, who scored a pivotal goal in the teams' Jan. 18th meeting in Syracuse to force overtime, had his left-footed shot ricochet off Marcos Chantel and behind O'Quinn for the decisive goal. Ptah Myers added an exclamation point with an easy 3-pointer into a wide open net at the 14:27 mark of the final quarter. Until that point, neither team had led by more than two points.

Neto, Syracuse's leading goal scorer, provided all the Silver Knights' offense. Defender Nelson Santana assisted on each of Neto's first two goals, the second coming off a restart to tie the score at 4 late in the first quarter.

Playing without leading scorer Machel Millwood, the Blast turned to their captain, Mike Lookingland, to open the scoring. Lookingland did just that about two minutes in, taking a great pass and burying the ball into a wide open net.

Lookingland's second goal came off a small rebound after an athletic save by Bryan O'Quinn to stop the initial shot. Although O'Quinn could not deny Lookingland's second tally, he put together a bunch of spectacular, highlight-reel saves throughout the game.

Baltimore, which wore pink jerseys to honor more than 100 cancer survivors in attendance, opened the scoring in the second half when Marco Mangione beat O'Quinn about three minutes in. The Knights answered back late in the quarter when J.T. Noone failed to clear the zone and instead turned the ball over to Neto, who beat William Vanzela with a strike into the top right corner.

The Knights pulled O'Quinn for the extra attacker, Kenardo Forbes, with 2:47 to play. Despite good pressure for the next two minutes, they could not find the equalizer, and Vanzela stopped the only shot on goal during that sequence.

The Blast swept the season series against the Silver Knights, winning all five games. Baltimore travels to Wichita on Friday, Feb. 8th for a 7:35 p.m. CT game against the Wichita Wings. The Silver Knights have the next two weeks off before traveling west on the New York State Thruway to try to complete a season sweep of the Rochester Lancers.
