Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Saskatoon, SK. - With the Western Hockey League trade deadline three days away, the Brandon Wheat Kings remain quiet off the ice but on the ice it was a trip to Saskatoon on Sunday - a trip that saw the home side score a 5-2 victory.

With the loss, the Wheat Kings fell four points back of Calgary in the race for the final wild card spot in the WHL's Eastern Conference with a 5-2 loss to the Blades.

Max Gerlach, Reece Harsch, Josh Paterson, Zach Huber and Emil Malysjev scored for the Blades, who improved to 25-12-5-0 while Brandon's record slipped to 16-15-3-3.

Ben McCartney and Luka Burzan scored in a losing cause for the Wheat Kings, who were outshot 37-29.

Both teams were deadlocked at two after one period, with the Blades scoring the lone goal of the second.

In the third, Huber scored the insurance goal in the opening minute before Malysjev fired into the empty net to put this game away.

The Wheat Kings, who played without veteran Linden McCorrister on Sunday, will be hoping to bounce back Tuesday night when they play host to the Portland Winter Hawks at 7pm.

Without McCorrister - the club's TELUS Player of the Month for December - Brandon played Sunday's game without an overage player as Schael Higson was designated for assignment late last week.

Tuesday is another "2 for Tuesday" which means fans will receive a "free" ticket to the game when they purchase another at regular price. In addition, the Keystone Centre will be offering a number of concession specials for the game.

Tickets to the game, which will be the Hawks' first game in Brandon in two years, go back on sale at 10am Monday at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also order online at keystonecentre.com or by calling (204) 726-3555.

While Brandon looks to get back on track on Tuesday, Thursday's trade deadline should garner a great deal of attention for both management and fans alike.
